New Type Foundry: RESET TYPE STUDIO crafts dynamic variable fonts

Reset Type Studio, a Uruguayan type foundry, crafts dynamic variable fonts with a focus on collaboration and experimentation. Explore their website for playful typefaces, interactive testers, and a passionate community.

Reset Type Studio was born after the pandemic, inspired by the need for human connections and teamwork, rooted in the joy of making type, harnessing the profound value of interpersonal relationships in the creative process. With over a decade in typographic design Fernando Díaz partnered with Matías Di Iorio, a recent graduate in Type Design Master from FADU-UBA, to pursue full-time type design. The type foundry studio represents a fusion of experience and talent, their collaboration is characterized by shared goals and a dynamic energy that shapes their approach to type design.

The team was soon joined by Avril Ponce de León, a promising student who designed the typeface "Silvestre" during the pandemic. Recognizing her talent, Fernando and Matías invited her to complete her work under their mentorship. Avril, now an integral part of the team, infuses their projects with her exceptional quality and innovative vision.

A crucial factor in the studio's development is sharing a workspace with Mundial, a leading graphic design studio in Uruguay. This collaboration allows for valuable feedback and continuous improvement of their typefaces, observing how respected designers use and test them throughout their design process.

Their Character

Reset’s type foundry personality is reflected primarily in their website, showcasing not just the typographic catalog but also various design examples using their fonts. They can be described as energetic and dynamic, combining professionalism with a relaxed, detail-oriented, and empathetic approach. All of their typefaces are variable, with some (like Mazumbá or Silvestre) focusing on experimental use of this technology. Finally, another key word to describe the type foundry's personality might be "Latino", as it represents their context and pride.

Embracing Variable Fonts

Their new type design revolves around variable fonts. In fact, their website is intentionally not set up to publish static typefaces. This approach acts as a manifesto, a strong commitment to the future, aiming to leverage new technologies for diverse projects that address new design challenges. Additionally, their fonts feature an extensive character set, with a minimum of 900 signs required for publication. They also include numerous OpenType features, some pictograms, and post-production work.

They also offer a section for typefaces in development that can be purchased and used before completion. This practice, common among many foundries, stems from the belief that it's beneficial to market a typeface during its lengthy design process, gaining valuable user feedback. This concept, inspired by the video game industry's "Early Access" model, allows users to test and provide feedback during the development stage.

A Type Foundry with a Mission

At the heart of Reset Type Studio is the creation of a passionate, relaxed, and collaborative environment that fosters enjoyment, learning, and friendship. Through their Journal section on the website, they share insights into their dedication and research. They encourage designers to use, test, and play with their fonts, offering free Trial Fonts for download on their website. As educators, Fernando and Matías empathize with students' challenges, offering a 100% discount on their typefaces for non-commercial academic use. Building close and effective relationships with clients and users is key for them, helping solve typographic challenges through dialogue and exchange. Their ultimate goal is to foster a vibrant community dialogue, showcasing the extensive process behind typography and supporting diverse projects, so feel free to contact them at: [email protected]
