Design students Gabriele Colia and Leonor Carvalho recently showcased their innovative approach to book and editorial design in their project, "The New Art of Making Books."
Inspired by Ulises Carrión's thought-provoking text of the same name, the students embarked on a journey to deconstruct the traditional book format and redefine its elements.
Carrión's text, originally published in Kontexts Magazine in 1975, challenges readers to reconsider the book's physicality, its contents, and its very essence. Colia and Carvalho took this challenge to heart, creating a book that serves as a tangible manifestation of Carrión's ideas.
At the core of their project lies a deep exploration of the book as a metaphor. The students experimented with the book's form, pushing the boundaries of conventional design. They questioned the role of each element, from the cover to the page numbers, ultimately stripping the book down to its fundamental components.
The result is a minimalist yet thought-provoking design that invites readers to engage with the book on a deeper level. The absence of traditional page elements encourages readers to focus on the text itself and contemplate the ideas presented by Carrión.
Colia and Carvalho's project is a testament to the power of design to challenge conventions and spark new ideas. Their work is a valuable contribution to the field of editorial design and serves as an inspiration for future designers.
